  • Marx Library - Room 181 USA North Drive Mobile, AL, 36608 United States (map)

Enjoy a Jazzy Lunch on Wednesday, May 22 with a performance by the Sound Buryer!

Steven Christopher Johnson is a Mobile, Alabama native musician, singer/songwriter, composer, and producer, who began playing trumpet at 12 years old and began reading, writing, composing, and playing by ear at 13. He began formal piano training on a Full Music Scholarship at 19 at Faulkner State Community College (Bay Minette, AL) transferring to, and extending his studies at Bishop State Community College (Mobile, AL) in Biology the following 2 years.

Known by some as "Coach" or "Rev" as part of the Gulf Coast dixieland band, The Dauphin Street Stompers, a band he co-founded after coming off tour with Brothers of Brass in 2018, adopted the name The Sound Buryer after his high school band director remarked, that: "at the presence of his playing, there seemed to be a 'barrier' of sound that you couldn't deny." Inspiration for his artist name also comes from the biblical text Matthew 25:18. His moniker also serves as a reminder to himself and others to never BURY their sound, but SHARE their sound.

The Sound Buryer got his professional start busking (street playing) solo and with various brass and dixieland bands along the Gulf Coast. With a combination of formal piano training and sounds he's heard from years of playing on street corners, he infuses those sounds into that of his own original music, specializing in Hot and Cool Jazz Instrumentals, along with R&B, Gospel Jazz, and Afrobeat Rhythms.
