ABOUT

OUR STORY

Jazz, Art, Writers, South Festival, or JAWS Fest, is a two month long celebration of music, art, and culture at the University of South Alabama. Hosted by the South Alabama University Libraries department, this festival brings jazz concerts, art galleries, and more to the South Alabama and Mobile communities. The first JAWS Festival was hosted in summer 2022 and has since grown into the celebration we know today.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Jazz Art Writers South (JAWS) Festival was started by a partnership between USA Libraries Art Galleries and The Black Ink Coalition. It was our desire to recognize the achievements of the Excelsior Brass Band after the passing of Charles Hall, their long-serving and seasoned tuba player. We made it our goal to recognize him and the achievements of the Excelsior Band in a significant way. This lead to our discovery that jazz and Mobile, Alabama have a deep and celebratory history that we would like to present to the public in unique and creative ways. The festival has grown since it's first year, adding a new art exhibit venue and more concerts as well as an expansion of our JAWS Youth program, which has reached 12 campuses and continues to grow. All of these elements will convene to celebrate jazz in our city. It's going to be a very exciting time!

In 2023, we took the step to establish the Jazz Art Writer South Festival as it’s own business entity. The JAWS Association became a registered 501(c)3 organization in May 2023 in order to serve the needs of the festival and to focus on engaging and developing events for our current and future partners. Our association of partnerships has grown to include: Mobile Art Association, Citi Poetry, Excelsior Band Preservation, Inc, Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama and the Mobile Arts Council. Through our experience with these partnerships, we have established our mission to connect the community to Mobile Jazz and all things pertaining to Jazz. To develop all aspects of promoting Jazz in the Mobile, AL area including music, art and literature. And to serve as a premier opportunity for the intersection of education and entertainment opportunities for artists involved in the culture of Jazz on the Southern Coastal Area.

In 2024, the Jazz Art Writers South Festival will engage the Mobile, Alabama community in celebration of jazz from talented musicians as well as visual artists and local author events. Our theme is “The Future of Jazz.” The festival will run from May 2024 to June 2024, with a kickoff concert in April. Events are held at the University of South Alabama Art Galleries in the Marx Library and Laidlaw Performing Arts Center. This festival is unique in our community as it presents jazz in many forms including visual art exhibits by local & youth artists, and live jazz concert performances. Our opening ceremony concert is performed by The Excelsior Band and our final event and concert will be performed by Andrew Ayers & Friends. It is our plan to continue celebrating Mobile's Jazz this way for years to come.

Jazz Art Writers South (J.A.W.S.) is a registered 501(c) non-profit organization bringing awareness and public celebration of jazz to the Greater Alabama Gulf Coast. Your support goes directly to providing Live Jazz Performances, Youth Art Projects, Spoken Word and Literary Author Collectives an opportunity to collaborate provided by the University of South Alabama Libraries Art Galleries and our partners on the university campus.
